Der am 10.7.1830 auf der kleinen Antilleninsel St.Thomas geborene Pissarro begann 1852 in Caracas zwei Jahre lang mit einem Freund zu malen, um dann ab 1855 in Paris an der Ecole des Beaux-Arts und der freien Académie Suisse zu studieren. In den Bildern dieser Zeit, stark tonigen Stimmungslandschaften, ist besonders der Einfluss von Corots Stil zu spüren.
