Wie so viele junge und aufgeschlossene Künstler des Fin de Siècle wandte sich auch Gustav Klimt Ende der 1890er Jahre von der akademischen Tradition ab. Er gründete 1897 mit anderen Künstlern die „Wiener Secession“, der er bis zu seinem Austritt 1905 als Präsident vorstand. Das eigene Ausstellungsgebäude der Secession ist auch heute noch Ort und Tempel für die neue junge Kunst.
