Der 1927 in Danzig geborene Günter Grass gilt als bedeutender Vertreter der deutschen Literatur. Daneben machte er sich auch als Bildhauer, Maler und Grafiker einen Namen. Nicht ohne Eigenironie sagte er von sich selbst: „Als bildender Künstler bin ich gelernter, als Schreiber ungelernter Künstler.“

Nach einer Steinmetzausbildung studierte Grass 1948/49 Bildhauerei an der Akademie in Düsseldorf und 1953 an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin.
