In stilisierter Ausführung repräsentierte das Pfeilersymbol Djed zusammengebundene Korngarben. Durch seine unmittelbare Verbindung zur Fruchtbarkeit wurde es schnell zum Hauptkultfetisch des Vegetations- und Totengottes Osiris von Abydos. Anlässlich der Mysterienfeiern für diesen Gott gehörte das "Aufrichten des Djed-Pfeilers" zu den wichtigsten Handlungsvorgängen.

Through its direct connection to fertility's Osiris from Abydos quickly became the main cult fetish of the vegetation and the death of God.
