Besondere Bekanntheit erlangte der Künstler durch seine Porträtdarstellungen und Stadtansichten. Auch in seinen Blumenbildern malte Kokoschka die Natur nicht einfach ab, sondern konstruierte eine neue, künstlerische Realität, ohne den Bildgegenstand vollkommen zu abstrahieren. 1953 gründete er in Salzburg die internationale Sommerakademie für Bildende Kunst, die er "Schule des Sehens" nannte.
