Der französische Maler und Grafiker Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) gilt als einer der Mitbegründer des französischen Impressionismus. Neben Monet und Sisley war er einer der ersten impressionistischen Landschaftsmaler. Dabei wurde er nie müde, ein und denselben Naturausschnitt immmer wieder in den verschiedensten Stimmungen und Beleuchtungen zu malen, um das wechselnde Farbenspiel des Lichts einzufangen. Erst in seinem Spätwerk thematisiert er auch das Großstadtleben.
