Mit Einführung der europäischen Kleidung in Japan wandelt sich das Netsuke vom Gebrauchsgegenstand zum kunstvoll bearbeiteten Sammlerobjekt. Dargestellt wurden u.a. Glücksgötter, Kinder, Geishas... Die ersten Netsuke entstanden zu Beginn der Edo-Periode (1615-1867), ihre Blütezeit erlebten sie im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert.
