Im Jahr 1993, zwei Jahre vor seinem Tod, wurde die "epochale Ausnahmeerscheinung" (Wolfgang Hildesheimer) zum Ehrenbürger der Stadt Oldenburg ernannt. Hier steht auch seit 2000 das Horst Janssen-Museum, das sich seinem enorm umfangreichen Werk widmet (das bislang in sieben Bänden vorliegende Werksverzeichnis reicht gerade bis 1980).
