Oskar Kokoschka was a significant pioneer of Expressionism as a painter, graphic artist and writer. He studied at the Vienna School of Arts and crafts and was influenced by the art of Vincent van Gogh, Ferdinand Hodlers and by the artists of the Vienna secession to Gustav Klimt. At the time of the Third Reich, his art was considered "degenerate" so he first fled to Prague and later lived in exile in London.
