Oskar Kokoschka war als Maler, Grafiker und Schriftsteller ein maßgeblicher Wegbereiter des Expressionismus. Er studierte an der Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule und wurde durch die Kunst Vincent van Goghs, Ferdinand Hodlers und durch die Künstler der Wiener Secession um Gustav Klimt geprägt. Zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus galt seine Kunst als "entartet", so dass er zunächst nach Prag floh und später im Londoner Exil lebte.

He studied at the Vienna School of Arts and crafts and was influenced by the art of Vincent van Gogh, Ferdinand Hodlers and by the artists of the Vienna secession to Gustav Klimt. At the time of the Third Reich, his art was considered "degenerate" so he first fled to Prague and later lived in exile in London.
