Erstmalig gestaltete Arcimboldo seine berühmten "Kompositköpfe" 1573 für den Zyklus "Die vier Jahreszeiten", in dem er die Porträts aus für die Jahreszeit charakteristischen Pflanzen und Pflanzenteilen zusammensetzte. Die Bilder enthalten zahlreiche Anspielungen, etwa auf das Haus Habsburg, und sind gleichzeitig eine Allegorie auf die vier Lebensalter - die vier Elemente Feuer (Sommer), Wasser (Winter), Luft (Frühling) und Erde (Herbst). Diese Serie befindet sich komplett in der Sammlung des Louvre.
Für die Reproduktion wurde eine völlig neuartige Technik verwendet: Das Fine Art LUVRÉE-Verfahren ist ein Quantensprung in der Drucktechnik, das einen dreidimensionalen Gemäldedruck in bisher unerreichter Detailtreue und Brillanz ermöglicht. In monatelanger Meisterarbeit feinst ziselierte Prägestöcke erzeugen ein sensationell realistisches Bild mit pastosen Pinselstrichen bis in kleinste Bildstrukturen. Die dreidimensionale Oberfläche ist nicht von einem Original-Gemälde zu unterscheiden!
