Als Baumeister des Königs Djoser zur Zeit der 3. Dynastie war Imhotep für die Errichtung der Stufenpyramide dieses Königs in Sakkara verantwortlich, des ersten Steinbaus der Menschheitsgeschichte. Diese herausragende Leistung war wohl für spätere Generationen der Anlaß, ihn zum Kulturheros und Heilgott zu erheben. Tempelreliefs und Inschriften beweisen die kultische Verehrung des Imhotep, dessen göttlicher Status sich auch dem Beinamen "Sohn des Ptah" widerspiegelt.
