Es war eine Bitte an Ernst Fuchs, die die Entstehung des "Lebensbaums" anstieß: Ursprünglich sollte die Skulptur als Auszeichnung für Menschen in aller Welt dienen, die sich um den Erhalt von Waldgebieten verdient gemacht haben. Als schließlich die ersten Entwürfe gefertigt waren, zog der Auftraggeber seinen Auftrag zurück. Fuchs beschloss, das Kunstwerk dennoch fertig zu stellen und bat Askew, ihn bei der Umsetzung zu unterstützen.
