Mit nicht einmal einem halben Quadratkilometer Fläche ist die Altstadt der kleinste Stadtteil Frankfurts. Hervorzuheben ist, dass er entgegen seiner Bezeichnung nicht der Altstadt im historischen Sinne (diese beinhaltete auch den heutigen Stadtteil Innenstadt, die einstige Neustadt), sondern in etwa der städtischen Bebauung entspricht, die gegen Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts erreicht und durch die noch teilweise erhaltene Staufenmauer begrenzt war.

Die Gemarkungsfläche ist vollständig bebaut; außer dem Main, dem Mainufer, Straßen, Plätzen und Hinterhöfen gibt es keine Freiflächen. Die Bebauung entstammt überwiegend der Wiederaufbauphase der Nachkriegszeit; darüber hinaus gibt es zahlreiche, teilweise nach Kriegszerstörung rekonstruierte historische Bauwerke.

Von den rund 3.500 Einwohnern der Altstadt sind etwa 32 Prozent Ausländer. Dies liegt über der Quote der Gesamtstadt (rund 24 Prozent), aber teils deutlich unter anderer zentraler Stadtteile. Die angrenzenden Stadtteile Innenstadt oder Bahnhofsviertel haben beispielsweise über 38 Prozent nichtdeutsche Einwohner.[1]

In der westlichen Altstadt dominieren kulturelle (Museen, Theater) und Dienstleistungsnutzungen, letztere vor allem entlang der Weißfrauen- und Berliner Straße. Die zentrale Altstadt dient vor allem dem Tourismus rund um die bedeutendsten Sehenswürdigkeiten wie die Paulskirche, den Römerberg und den Kaiserdom sowie als Sitz der Stadtverwaltung administrativen Zwecken. In der nördlichen Altstadt ist der Einzelhandel stark vertreten, vor allem in den Straßen Neue Kräme und Töngesgasse. In der östlichen Altstadt dominiert die Wohnnutzung, das Viertel ist außerdem Zentrum des Frankfurter Kunsthandels (Braubachstraße und Fahrgasse).
