Jan Vermeer gehört zu den bedeutendsten holländischen Malern des Barock. Die Lebensdaten des niederländischen Genremalers orientieren sich an der Taufe am 31.10.1632 in Delft und seiner dortigen Beisetzung am 15.12.1675. Da es zu dieser Zeit in Delft keine Malerschule gab, erhielt der Sohn eines Seidenwirkers, Kunsthändlers und Gastwirts eine handwerkliche Ausbildung. Die Aufnahme in die Delfter Lukasgilde 1650 zeugen von seiner Tätigkeit als Maler. Heute sind lediglich 37 Gemälde von seiner Hand noch bekannt. Thematisch konzentrierte er sich auf die Genremalerei, denn in seinem Œuvre gibt es nur wenige Porträts oder religiöse Bilder.

There was at that time in Delft no Malerschule, the son of a Seidenwirkers, art dealer and innkeeper received a technical training. The inclusion in the Delft Guild of St. Luke in 1650 testify to his work as a painter. Today, only 37 paintings from his hand yet known. Thematically, he focused on the genre painting, because in his oeuvre there are few portraits or religious images.
