Im Alter erblindete Degas zunehmend, wodurch ihm das Malen unmöglich wurde. Doch seine Schaffenskraft blieb ungebrochen. Zunehmend verlegte er sich daher auf kleine Skulpturen, die ihm auch als Bildhauer einen ewigen Ruf sichern. Die "Spanische Tänzerin" wurde 1900 erstmals von Hébrand gegossen.
