Seine Freundschaft zu Franz Marc ermöglichte bereits 1910 einen Aufenthalt am Tegernsee. Schon in den hier entstandenen Bildern zeigte sich Mackes Sensibilität für Lichteffekte. Gesteigert wird dies in den Aquarellen, die auf der berühmten Tunis-Reise, die er 1914 mit Paul Klee und Louis Moillet unternahm, entstanden. Formvereinfachung und die Leuchtkraft der Farben kennzeichnen diese Werkserie.
