Als Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) schon längst ein renommierter Künstler war, den Jugendstil der Wiener Ringstrasse durch seine Wandgemälde entscheidend geprägte hatte und Mitbegründer der Wiener Secession war, entstand sein „Goldener Stil“. Durch byzantinische Mosaiken inspiriert, fügte er ornamentale Farbflächen in ein goldenes Bett wie gefasste Edelsteine.
