Zunächst als Logo für seine Plattenfirma, dann immer wieder als Karikatur auf seinen Plattencovern und schließlich - im bewegten Bild - als Trickfilmzuspielung bei seinen großen TV-Shows... der Ottifant gehört zu Otto wie Otto zu Ostfriesland.
Dabei hat der Dickhäuter im Laufe der Zeit ein erstaunliches Eigenleben entwickelt. Er hat es zur Comicfigur, zu einer eigenen TV-Serie und zu einem abendfüllenden Kinofilm gebracht, wurde zum Star eines Videospiels und einer Reihe von Computerspielen und schließlich sogar zum Maskottchen des ostfriesischen Fußballclubs BSV Kickers in Ottos Heimatstadt Emden.
