1939, im Jahr nach Barlachs Tod, wurden sie ihm ausgehändigt, und so überstanden sie die Kriegszeit "in Kisten [...] unter der Veranda im Hause meiner Schwiegermutter", wie er später berichtete. Erst 1947 fanden sie endlich ihren Weg in die vorgesehenen Nischen der Katharinenkirche.
