Bereits im Alter von 16 Jahren begann er an der Akademie der Schönen Künste in Florenz zu studieren, mit 28 erhielt er den Lehrstuhl für Skulptur an der Kunstschule Villa Reale in Monza. Mit seiner Teilnahme an der Biennale in Venedig 1932 begann sein großartiger Erfolg. Ende der 40er Jahre gelang ihm mit seinen bekannten Reiterfiguren der internationale Durchbruch.
