Ben Willikens, born in 1939 in Leipzig, studied at the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart at Heinz Trökes painting and graphics. Trökes made him with the Bauhaus doctrine familiar, and so Willikens was known for his strictly composed space images. The cool distance, reminiscent of the New Objectivity is amplified by the technique of grisaille, a gray painting Willikens picks because of their particular mood values. Its 1977 created space, the "Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci brought him world fame. With space images, he developed a distinctive visual language, which until today secures a solitary position his oeuvre. Until his retirement in 2004 Willikens was rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
