Bereits in den 30er Jahren gehörte er zu den führenden Persönlichkeiten des Surrealismus, doch erst nach dem Krieg entstand sein eigentliches künstlerisches Vermächtnis. Das Zeichnen von Personen in den Straßen regte ihn zu seinen großen, dünnen Skulpturen an - ferne, fast körperlos wirkende Gestalten, die zugleich Distanz und Nähe ausdrücken.
