Technik und Ausstattung der darstellenden Kunst scheinen das Interesse des jungen Mannes geweckt zu haben. Nach einer Lehre als Filmarchitekt, Bühnen- und Kostümbildner kam es zu einem ersten Engagement in Oldenburg. Braunschweig und Wiesbaden folgten. Anfang der 60er Jahre widmete sich Gerlach dem Werbefilm und 1963, für den Sendebeginn des ZDF, erfand er die Mainzelmännchen.
