Praxiteles (um 395 v. Chr. bis etwa 320 v. Chr.) war im 4. Jahrhundert vor unserer Zeit griechischer Bildhauer in Athen. Von Plinius wird er wegen seiner Kunst der Marmorbearbeitung gerühmt. Darüber hinaus sind aber auch Arbeiten aus Bronze bekannt. Entgegen der heutigen Vorstellung, dass die edle Wirkung des Marmors nur durch den weißen Stein hervorgerufen wird, ließ Praxiteles seine Skulpturen durch den Maler Nikias bemalen. Durch schriftliche Überlieferung, in denen seine Werke beschrieben werden, sind uns heute über fünfzig Werke bekannt. Sie wären als Skulpturen gänzlich verloren, hätten die Römer nicht Repliken angefertigt.
