Getreu dem Delphischen Spruch „Erkenne Dich selbst!“ ließ er nicht ab, in seiner Liebe-zur-Weisheit, der Philosophie, nach grundsätzlichen Werten, wie Tugend, Gerechtigkeit oder Tapferkeit, nach einer ethischen Basis für das richtige Denken und Handeln zu suchen.
