Wie sehr Landschaften das Werk eines Malers prägen können, dafür ist vielleicht das Südfrankreich im Spätwerk Vincent van Goghs das berühmteste Beispiel. Manchmal gilt das gar für eine ganze Künstlergruppe: Otto Modersohn, Paula Becker, Fritz Mackensen und der hier mit seinen "Birken von Worpswede" vertretene Fritz Overbeck (1869-1909) aus der Künstlerkolonie Worpswede arbeiteten sich geradezu obsessiv an der beeindruckenden Landschaft des Teufelsmoors nahe Bremen ab.
Das Sujet als solches muss jedoch nicht einmal ein geografisches Vorbild exakt abschildern. Bisweilen dominiert der Reiz der freien Komposition nach eigenen ästhetischen Vorstellungen.
