Marc setzte sich mit dem Naturalismus, dem Jugendstil und dem französischen Impressionismus auseinander, suchte aber nach einer neuen Ausdruckssprache, um "das geistige Wesen der Dinge" darstellen zu können. Mit nie zuvor gekannter Konsequenz öffnete er den Weg für eine Kunst, in der Farben weit über die naturalistische Darstellung eine symbolische Bedeutung erlangten: „Jede Farbe muss klar sagen, wer und was sie ist, und muss dazu auf einer klaren Form stehen“, erklärte Marc. Blau ist bei ihm die Farbe des Geistigen, rot sind Liebe, Leidenschaft und Verletzlichkeit, gelb ist die Sonne und die Weiblichkeit.
