Die seit zwei Jahrtausenden bestaunten vergoldeten Bronzepferde von einer spätklassischen griechischen Quadriga schmückten einst in Byzanz die Kaiserloge am Hippodrom. 1204 brachten Venedigs heilige Krieger unter dem Dogen Enrico sie als Beute des 4. Kreuzzugs in die Lagunenstadt. Als sie vor dem Markus-Dom in die Höhe gezogen wurden und ihren Platz über dem Hauptportal in der Mitte der Kirchenfassade einnahmen, ergriff grenzenlose Begeisterung die Schaulustigen auf dem Markusplatz. Inzwischen sind die Pferde weitgereist: Eine internationale Tounee führte sie auch nach Berlin.
