Ikonen sind weit mehr als nur Heiligendarstellungen. Sie sind Inbegriff und Zeugnis des orthodoxen Christentums, und vielen von ihnen wird Heil- und Wunderkraft zugeschrieben, und sie wurden so zum Zentrum von Pilgerstätten.
