Franz Marcs (1880-1916) einzigartige Begabung wurde an der Münchner Akademie erkannt und gefördert. Auf mehreren Parisreisen begegnete er zum ersten Mal den Werken van Goghs, die ihn maßgeblich beeindruckten und ihm halfen, eine eigenständige künstlerische Sprache zu entwickeln. Über seinen Freund August Macke lernte er Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter und Alfred Kubin kennen, mit denen er 1911 die expressionistische Künstlervereinigung "Der Blaue Reiter" gründete. Bei Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges wurde Marc zum Kriegsdienst eingezogen und fiel zwei Jahre später in den Grabenkämpfen vor Verdun.
