Vom griechischen kathedra für "Gottessitz" leitet sich der Name der zum Himmel strebenden gotischen Kathedrale ab. Für den Bildhauer Rodin waren die Hände Inbegriff der kreativen, göttlichen Schaffenskraft. Ohne einander zu berühren umfassen sie einem Tanz der Hände gleich den Raum, in dem die Idee, der göttliche Funke entsteht. Mit seiner Studie erhebt Rodin das Fragment zur Gesamtskulptur und nimmt damit weite Bereiche der modernen Plastik vorweg.
