Ando Hiroshige (auch: Utagawa Hiroshige, 1797-1858) gilt neben Hokusai als bedeutendster Farbholzschnitzer seiner Zeit. Der erfolgreichste war er allemal: Nachdem ihn die Veröffentlichung seiner „53 Stationen des Tokaido“ (1833-1834) praktisch über Nacht berühmt gemacht hatte, blieben seine wohlkomponierten, detailversessenen Landschaftsbilder bis an sein Lebensende so populär, dass häufig fünfstellige Auflagen erreicht wurden. Noch zu Lebzeiten als „Meishoeshi“ (Meister in der Darstellung berühmter Orte) verehrt, sind es nicht zuletzt seine Werke, die den Weg der japanischen Holzschnitzkunst nach Europa bahnten, allen voran die „100 Ansichten berühmter Orte in Edo“ (Tokio), die er in seinen letzten Lebensjahren schuf. Van Gogh begeisterte sich dafür und fertigte sogar Kopien an.
