Tiere übten eine besondere Faszination auf ihn aus. Franz Marc hat nicht nur als Künstler auf das Genaueste ihre Anatomie studiert, sondern er wusste auch viel über ihr Verhalten und ihre Gebärden. Und so ziehen sich Tiermotive durch sein gesamtes künstlerisches Werk, insbesondere auch die Darstellung von Pferden. Es gibt zahlreiche Zeichnungen, die berühmte Kleinplastik "Zwei Pferde" aus den Jahren 1908/1909 - und natürlich nachmalig geradezu ikonisch gewordene Werke wie sein "Blaues Pferd" von 1911.
