Van Gogh (1853-1890) stammt aus einer protestantischen Pastorenfamilie in Groot-Zundert in Brabant. Mit der Kunst kam er zuerst in Kontakt durch einen Onkel, der Kunsthändler war. Zunächst arbeitete van Gogh in Filialen der Galerie Goupil in Den Haag, London und Paris, aber auch als Hauslehrer in England und als Methodistenprediger. Als Prediger im Bergarbeitergebiet Boringe begann er erstmals zu zeichnen. Wenige Monate besuchte er anschließend die Brüsseler Akademie, bildete sich aber hauptsächlich als Autodidakt weiter.
