Von 1948 an lebte Pablo Picasso in Vallauris an der Côte d’Azur und beschäftigte sich intensiv mit keramischen Arbeiten. Er arbeitete bei der Umsetzung seiner Entwürfe wie auch bei der Erstellung von Linolschnitten und Radierungen eng mit ortsansässigen Handwerkern zusammen – letztere etwa fertigte die Grafikwerkstatt von Hidalgo Arneras. Bis Ende der fünfziger Jahre gab es in Vallauris mehrere Ausstellungen keramischer Kunst des Meisters, und er ließ es sich nicht nehmen, auch die Plakate dafür selbst zu entwerfen.
