Bereits in den 70er und 80er Jahren füllte Otto riesige Hallen, erzielte mit seinen legendären TV-Shows heute unvorstellbare Einschaltquoten und war mit seinen Langspielplatten regelmäßig in den Top-Ten der (Musik!-)Charts vertreten. Sein erster Film von 1985 gilt noch heute als erfolgreichster Kinofilm seit Beginn der Zuschauererfassung, und wollte man die ihm verliehenen Preise hintereinander aufstellen, ergäbe das wohl eine gefühlte Strecke von Emden bis Aurich. Allein den Deutschen Comedy-Preis hat er gleich dreimal erhalten, darunter – mit Mitte 50 – auch für sein Lebenswerk.
