Bei ihm suchte man Heilung, wenn keines Menschen Heilkunst mehr helfen konnte: Im gesamten Altertum galt der Tempel des Götterarztes Asklepios (Äskulap) in Epidaurus als Wallfahrtsort. Die große Götterstatue im Tempel selbst, von der Pausanias berichtet, ging in den Wirren der Zeiten verloren. Was blieb, sind kleine Statuetten wie diese, mit denen die durch seine göttliche Heilkunst Geretteten ihm ihren Tribut zollten. Das Bildhauermodell zeigt Äskulap in typischer Darstellung mit seiner um den Stab gewundenen Natter als mächtige, ganz vom Willen geprägte Gestalt.
