Sein Leben war erfüllt von jenem humanistischen Menschenbild und universellen Erkenntnis- und Betätigungsdrang, der für seine Epoche charakteristisch war. Unablässig beobachtend, registrierend und analysierend, schuf er allein schon als Wissenschaftler und Techniker ein riesiges Werk. Zum Beispiel beschäftigte er sich mit der geologischen Formations- und der Wolkenbildung, der Strömung des Wassers und der Luft, dem Vogelflug und Apparaturen, die den Flug des Menschen ermöglichen sollten.
Sein Werk als bildender Künstler ist demgegenüber geringer, nimmt aber einen allerhöchsten Rang ein, wie das „Abendmahl“ oder die „Mona Lisa“.
