Der österreichische Bildhauer Hans Freilinger (1925-2012) gehörte zu jener Generation Künstler, deren Arbeit noch fest auf handwerklicher Vorausbildung ruhte. Hatte der in seinen künstlerischen Fähigkeiten früh auffällig gewordene Freilinger vor dem Krieg noch den Beruf des Tischlers gelernt (und sich nach 1945 mit Schnitzarbeiten beschäftigt), machte ihn die Nachkriegszeit zum Stukkateur und Restaurator. Als solcher wirkte er maßgeblich an der Wiederherstellung der frühbarocken Kuppel des Salzburger Doms mit. Ein Studium der Bildhauerei an der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste folgte, wobei sich der Künstler früh für eine naturalistische, von gängigen Modernismen freie Darstellungsweise entschied.
