Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts entstand der Jugendstil, der ganz Europa eroberte. Die Bezeichnung "Jugendstil" entstand in Anlehnung an den Titel der Zeitschrift "Die Jugend". Er richtete sich in erster Linie gegen die Nachahmung historischer Stile und Zierformen. Es wurde eine unplastische räumliche Ornamentik von stark bewegtem linearem Schwung entwickelt, die schließlich in einer typisch verspielten Stilistik mündete. Es entstanden unzählige Objekte, deren Spektrum von der Malerei, dem Kunstgewerbe bis hin zur Architektur reichte.
