Janssen war Künstler durch und durch. Stets führte er Skizzenblock und Stift mit sich, unablässig kommentierte er seine Umwelt: die Freunde (nicht zuletzt: Freundinnen), die Natur, seine umfassende Lektüre - und in hundertfacher Variation immer wieder sich selbst. Durch seine ihm eigene Strichführung, die er mit harter Wirkung ausführte, gelang ihm ein brillanter Ausdruck, gleichviel, ob es um die für ihn so typischen sarkastischen Kommentare zur Gegenwart oder um eine Liebeserklärung an das gezeichnete Modell ging.
