Der 1927 in Eberswalde bei Berlin geborene Maler und Bildhauer lernte das Zeichnen an der Kunstschule in der Orangerie des Eutiner Schlosses. Gleich nach dem Krieg ging er an die Hamburger Hochschule für Bildende Künste und studierte dort Grafik. Nach dem Abschluss seiner Ausbildung blieb er dort gleich als Zeichenlehrer und wurde 1963 Professor.

Immediately after the war, he went to the Hamburg Academy of fine arts and studied graphics. After completing his education, he stayed there just as a drawing teacher and became a professor in 1963.
