Schon Munchs Familie besaß im kleinen Ort Asgardstrand am Oslofjord ein Ferienhaus, in dem der Maler (1863-1944) seine Sommer verbrachte. Im Alter von 35 erwarb er ein eigenes Gebäude, das ihm bis ins hohe Alter Zufluchtsort blieb. Selbst als er längst als bedeutendster Maler Skandinaviens galt und seine Werke Preise erzielten, die es ihm erlaubten, in Erkely nahe Oslo ein großes Gut zu erwerben, kehrte er regelmäßig in sein kleines Fischerhaus zurück, um dort zu leben und zu arbeiten.

Die Bedeutung Asgardstrands für Munchs Kunst ist nicht zu unterschätzen. Das zu jeder Tageszeit wechselnde Licht und die üppigen Farben, die er dort vorfand, prägten seine Palette noch in den Landschaftsbildern der Alterswerke. Bilder wie "Der Garten" zeigen einen Munch, der neben seinen berühmten, die menschliche Psyche auslotenden und zergliedernden Meisterwerken Arbeiten von einfacher, großer Schönheit schuf.
