Schon mit 14 Jahren kam Krøyer an die Königlich Dänische Kunstakademie. Als junger Künstler unternahm er von 1877 bis 1881 ausgedehnte Reisen nach Spanien, Italien und insbesondere Frankreich, wo er in Paris die Impressionisten studierte. Im Sommer 1882 kam Krøyer zum ersten Mal nach Skagen, wo er von nun an jeden Sommer verbrachte und der Hauptvertreter der dortigen Künstlerkolonie wurde.
