Already in 1840, Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862) had an international reputation as a landscape painter. From almost all European countries, Honourable awards were granted him. He built a painting Academy, which already had 14 students in the year of the opening in Kleve. in 1844, he built a city Palace, the present headquarters of the "Museum Koekkoek" in the same place. in 1862, he died at the height of his fame as the most important Dutch romantic landscape painter.
