Schon 1840 besaß Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862) als Landschaftsmaler Weltruf. Aus fast allen europäischen Ländern wurden ihm ehrenvolle Auszeichnungen zuteil. Er errichtete in Kleve eine Malerakademie, die bereits im Jahre der Eröffnung 14 Schüler zählte. 1844 baute er sich im gleichen Ort ein Stadtpalais, dem heutigen Sitz des „Museum Koekkoek“. 1862 stirbt er auf dem Höhepunkt seines Ruhmes als der bedeutendste niederländisch romantische Landschaftsmaler.

He built a painting Academy, which already had 14 students in the year of the opening in Kleve. in 1844, he built a city Palace, the present headquarters of the "Museum Koekkoek" in the same place. in 1862, he died at the height of his fame as the most important Dutch romantic landscape painter.
