Barlachs "Zweifler" entstand 1931, als sich die Verfemung bereits ankündigte. Wiederholt wurde Barlach aus nationalsozialistischen Kreisen scharf angegriffen. Die Figur des in die Knie gesunkenen, händeringenden Mannes ist die eines Bedrängten und formuliert vielleicht auch Barlachs Zweifel an der humanistischen Wirkungsmacht seiner Kunst. Ihre überzeitliche Geltung aber hat sie als eindrucksvolle Darstellung des Zweifels, der Unsicherheit, wohl auch der Verzweiflung als Conditio Humana.
